Exam-ical Advantage: Using the Lever of Exam Previews to Amplify Student Learning

One of the dilemmas of modern science teaching has been summarized as "assessment drives learning," i.e., students mostly learn what they think they will be tested on. A new NSF-funded project (https://faculty.washington.edu/crowther/Preview/) aims to meet this reality by making it easier for faculty to create exams that test students' higher-order thinking as transparently and as equitably as possible. Co-PI Greg Crowther will lead an interactive workshop on Exam Previews, a framework in which students receive extensive information about exams before taking them, enabling them to tackle in-class exams that would otherwise be unfairly complex. After learning about the two main "flavors" of Exam Previews -- Test Question Templates (TQTs) and Public Exams -- participants will work in small groups to create samples of Exam Preview materials suitable for their own introductory physics courses.
This workshop is offered free of charge, and will be online via Zoom.
Facilitator: Greg Crowther (Everett Community College, WA)
