Proposal Title: How and Why to Teach Intro Physics Without Grades
Abstract Type: Workshop
Abstract: Grading contributes to inequity in education: it serves to gatekeep, it undermines mental health, it acts as a barrier to accessibility, and it gets in the way of students' inherent internal motivation. In response, educators are turning to ungrading, the practice of de-emphasizing or removing grades (though not feedback) in formal education settings. There are a wide variety of ways to implement ungrading, many of which center around metacognition, self-reflection, and self-evaluation. In this workshop I will share how I have removed all grades from my 80-100 person intro physics courses. We will discuss the motivations for ungrading physics courses, and I will share preliminary research on the effects of this approach. I will demonstrate some activities that I use to scaffold metacognition and self-reflection, including some that address imposter phenomenon and stereotype threat. Time permitting, attendees will discuss and plan how ungrading could work in their own contexts.
