| Abstract: | The Physics Program at Suffolk County Community College has 7 learning outcomes which are assessed throughout a 5-year cycle. This work reports on the assessment of A) "students will read, understand and communicate effectively the reasoning contained in a scientific text", and B) "students will evaluate and discuss physics-related ethical, social or sustainability issues using scientific knowledge and reasoning". We have recently modified our physics program to be able to assess items A and B. While these items are common for most science disciplines at SCCC, physics already had a heavy program schedule without room for extra activities or additions to the curriculum. Aided by improved alignment of topic coverage with the nearby four-year institution, we describe here the results of how the last 3 weeks of one of our lab classes for majors has been converted into oral presentations on topics that satisfy A and B, with positive impacts beyond that class. |
