Proposal Title: Launching rockets at Santa Fe college
Abstract Type: Poster
Abstract: We report on our first experience in introducing elements of project design in a physics course at Santa Fe college. Students taking the calculus-based physics sequence at Santa Fe are primarily engineering majors who often find themselves at a disadvantage when they transfer to a four-year institution because they have yet to get exposed to design, an important component of engineering education. To avoid creating a new design-focused or project-based course we added a short activity focused on launching model-rockets and collecting data for analysis to the first semester course. Alpha III model rocket models were assembled by the students and equipped with Raspberry Pi Pico microcontrollers, barometric pressure sensors and accelerometers. Python code and Vernier's Logger Pro software were used for data analysis. The project received positive reviews from the students and added to their engagement with the course. The poster will discuss lessons learned and plans for improvement.
