| Proposal Title: | Authentic Research Experiences with Telescopes |
|---|---|
| Abstract Type: | Workshop |
| Abstract: | Come learn how to work with undergraduate students to do small-telescope astronomical research using the Las Cumbres Observatory (LCO), a fully robotic professional global telescope network. In this workshop you will learn how to create an Astronomy Research Seminar (ASR) for students, with direct hands on experience with astronomical catalogs, robotic telescopes, and data analysis tools. Students will select targets to observe, request the LCO observations, analyze their data, write a scientific paper, and publish their results in the Journal of Double Star Observations (jdso.org). The students will run their own research projects and there are no prerequisites for students to participate. The ASR can be included as part of an introductory physics/astro course or as an outside activity. This program is being developed as part of an NSF PAARE pilot program called USA Sky Partners. |
